Nepenthes hirsuta
Photography Rod Kruger © copyright 2004
| DESCRIPTION: Nepenthes hirsuta, as the Latin name suggests, the plant is covered in dark hairs, these being more prominent on the stems and underside of the leaf. Pitchers are usually green in colour, but a red spotted form is known from Gunung Santubong, near Kuching. There the plants grow in the shadier vegetation of the rainforest floor, where little sunlight is directly received. This species is also known to inhabit mossy banks in lower montane forest, open areas and disturbed vegetation. Although plain in colour, the coarse covering of hairs make this an unusual species to cultivate. LOCATION ELEVATION: 200-900 meters CULTIVATION SCALE: 1-5 (1-easy, 5-challenging) |
